Before you say yes though, its important to consider the employee benefits package. Employment benefits can comprise 40%, or even more, of your total compensation package, so its important to know exactly what benefits you will be provided with and to get enough benefit information to ensure that the coverage is what you need. Investigate Benefits Coverage It is much better to be fully informed before you accept a position than it is to have an unpleasant surprise later on. For example, if youre elend married and want to cover your partner, will your health insurance plan insure him or her? Perhaps, if domestic partner coverage is provided. However, some plans only cover same-sex partners, not opposite-sex partners. Even though this sounds discri minatory, and its certainly not fair, a federal court has ruled that its legal. Employer-provided insurance plans can have waiting periods of up to 90 days. So, if you or anyone in your family, have health issues, you will need to inquire about when coverage would go into effect. If youre leaving one job for another, you will need interim coverage, most likely through the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA). Vacation leave also varies depending on the organization you work for. Some employers offer a generous amount of vacation or flex ti me off others dont. There are many different scenarios, as you can see, so its important to review what benefit coverage is provided and to decide whether the employee benefits package is one that meets your needs. A great salary isnt always going to be enough to compensate for an employee benefit plan that doesnt offer what you need. In general, there are employee benefits questions you should ask about to ensure that your overall compensation plan is right for you and for your family. Also, ask specific questions based on your needs and on the criteria that are important to you. Questions to Ask Does the employee pay for health insurance coverage? If so, how much for individual coverage and/or family coverage? Is the premium deducted from my paycheck? How much is the deductible?Can I review a summary of the health insurance plan options? In the end, I missed about two months of work, and Im mucksmuschenstill trying to make up for it today.Divorce is hard, whether youre expecting it or not. And maintaining a high level of work performance through the long and often devastating process is even more difficult. But it doesnt have to be an uphill slog the entire time. There are steps you can take to help yourself get through a tough personal time without your professional life falling apart. This guide can help.Take a Few Days OffWhen youre first confronted with the reality of an impending divorce, whether it was you or your partner who initiated the split, the trauma can be difficult to handle. Erica EB Baumer, co-owner of Sage Career and Life Consultants, suggests immediately using some vacation days to refocus.This is a grieving process, Baumer says. If you have some vacation time, dont be afraid to strategically use it. I wouldnt take a month off. Just take a few days off here and there to get grounded.You need to get through the initial few days and come to terms with whats happening. Youll have the time to sit and ponder the thousand questions youll be asking yourself, without interference from calls or schmelzglass. Make those days all about you- feel all the emotions you need to feel, and then find ways to self-soothe. If you normally work out, try to get to the gym. Take short walks outside. Try yoga. Listen to music that makes you feel good. Try to avoid junk food. If you cant take any time off, try to work remotely. When you get back to the office, youll have that much more mental stabi lity to focus and stay at a high performance level. Divorces do tend to drag on, though, so keep an eye on yourself throughout the process- if you find youre suddenly struggling and unable to focus or think through your daily projects, it might be time to pop in a vacation day. Just keep track of how much time off you have left and be sure to save a day for your actual court date, as well. Theyre always during the week. Focus on Work, if You CanOnce the initial dust has settled, head back into the office and try to focus on (or distract yourself with) your work. For Jason Roe, an automation specialist who divorced when he was 29, that meant reaffirming that his job was his and his alone. I pushed myself to remember that she can take away the relationship, she can take things from our shared possessions, but what she cannot take from me is my career, Roe said. Your job may be the only thing you feel like you have full control over during a tumultuous time.Its a fine line, though divi ng into work can wear you out more than you already are from the divorce. Make sure to build in self-care (see below)- otherwise you could burn out and set yourself even further behind.Of course, some people just arent the throw-yourself-into-work type. In that situation, what eventually worked for me was trying to think of my job as a return to normalcy. Its a way to feel, at least temporarily, like nothing has changed. Dan Blair, a family therapist and the owner of Blair Counseling and Mediation, suggests taking short breaks throughout the day as well. Try setting a routine, like working for 20 minutes then taking five to regroup. Use the break time to release any emotions you may be feeling, even if that means hiding in a bathroom stall for a few minutes. Then head back to your desk and get back to work.Talk to Your anf hrerBlair notes that its important to talk to your boss and perhaps a colleague about whats happened, so someone at the office is aware your performance may suffer a bit and can help you stay accountable. If your supervisor can be trusted, let him or her know, he says. It doesnt have to be a drawn-out conversation. First, Baumer says, make sure you do it in person- written things can be shared, and you wont want that. Then strip the situation of all the details. Its as simple as scheduling a quick meeting and telling your boss that youre going through a divorce. Let them know you may need some time off for court dates and meetings with lawyers, and come into the conversation with suggestions for how youll make up any work you miss on those days. You can also ask if they know of any resources you might be able to utilize, such as an Employee Assistance Program. Baumer notes that your boss can act as a touchpoint to make sure youre doing all right and to let you know if your work is s uffering. To avoid getting to that point, though, try scheduling a meeting every couple of weeks to check in. (You can use this email template to ask your boss for regular one-on-ones.)Practice Self-CareBaumer and Blair both caution that deep emotions like those involved in a divorce take a long time to work through, and youll continue to feel waves of pain for quite a while. In difficult moments at work, try going for a walk to get a change of scenery, or focusing on your breathing. You could even try keeping a positive quote or an item with a positive emotional connection on your desk. And although it may seem impossible to look past the day youre struggling to get through, its important to think about the long term. Baumer and Blair both suggest creating a regimen of self-care for yourself. Plan out your schedule a month in advance. For example, on Mondays and Wednesdays before work, youll go to the gym and exercise, and on Friday evenings, youll take a relaxing bath. Build in so me structure to incorporate things that make you feel good in some way, and try as hard as possible to stick to it. That rhythm will help you get back in the right mindset for work it becomes routine, and youll have a clearer head because youve been taking care of your mind and body.Make a Bigger ChangeYour divorce might even push you in a new direction professionally. Blair, for example, was blindsided by his divorce. But once he got past the initial shock, he doubled down on his counseling career and channeled his emotions into a new angle for his business- preventing and mediating divorces. The traumatic experience ultimately helped him focus on work in a new way and use his experience to help others.Emotionally trying times can have a huge impact on your life. But they dont need to drastically affect your work performance in the moment, or your career in the long run. And sometimes divorce can even have a lasting impact on your career in a good way- whether it leads to a better relationship with your boss, a promotion because you worked hard to distract yourself, or even a bigger change that helps you gain stability or pursue a new interest.

Warning skills shortages ahead Warning skills shortages aheadPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie Chun Australias skills shortage crisis is expected to intensify in the coming months and years, resulting in major gaps in the workforce in a range of occupations and industries. This will have a significant impact on productivity and on Australias potential for economic growth. Skills shortages A high risk business, a report conducted by the Australian Industry Group (AIG) and Deloitte Consulting, surveyed over 400 companies from the manufacturing, services and construction sectors. The survey found that the vast majority of companies are concerned about looming skills shortages and how they will negatively impact business. As a result, organisations are giving high priority (38.8%) or top priority (8%) to managing future shortages. Of particular concern is that shortages are intensifying in occupations associated with manufacturing, construction and engineering, which are pivotal to the A ustralian economy, says Heather Ridout, Chief Executive, Australian Industry Group (AiG) These occupations are based on skills which have a long development lead time, are in high use across the economy and whose absence puts industry at high risk, says Ridout. Recruiting in the past six months Over the last six months, recruitment activity in the surveyed businesses has been strong, with three quarters having filled, or attempted to fill, positions (especially in large and medium-sized organisations). However, almost two thirds of companies had difficulty filling positions and more than a quarter of all vacancies remained unfilled. Positions covered a wide range of occupations across all skill levels, from the highly skilled to the unskilled. Vacancies were prevalent for engineers, accountants, metal casting, forging and finishing trades workers, metal fitters and machinists, business administration managers, structural steel and welding trades workers, machine operators, and sal es and clerical positions. Difficulty filling vacancies In the majority of cases, difficulty filling vacancies resulted from difficulty in finding those with the requisiteur skills specialised skills required for the job (59.3%) overall skills and experience (54.1%) and local training vorkaufsrechts (32.6%). In 48.5 per cent of cases, there was simply a lack of applicants for the roles. Companies in the services sector had the greatest difficulty finding applicants with the right general skills and experience. For 73.9 per cent of services companies, this was a major issue. Recruiting in the next twelve months Recruitment activity will remain strong in the coming year, with over three quarters of companies expecting to hire in the next 12 months. However, nearly half of all businesses are expecting to face difficulties in filling vacancies. This will hamper businesses production and ability to deliver services. How businesses are dealing with skills shortages Businesses choose t o address skills shortages in the most practical ways possible. When a vacancy cannot be filled, the most favoured option is to upskill existing staff a course of action taken by 37.8 per cent of companies. The next most popular approach is to outsource or sub-contract the work (31.2%), followed by redesigning jobs around available skills (18.3%). Still, in 12.6 per cent of cases, unfilled vacancies result in limits on production levels. Chronic shortages in skilled occupations are of particular concern because of the time required to develop the necessary skills sometimes years and their central importance to business operations. The chief executive of Skills Australia, Robin Shreeve, says, If we suddenly had a shortage of signalling engineers, for instance, it would take six or seven years to retrain them. We need to plan for the future to avoid that problem. What companies need to do There are a number of strategies that businesses can implement to manage the skills shortage crisis. These would include Increasing in-house training and development. Implementing a long-term strategy to train the next generation and develop apprentices. Considering ways to retain skilled workers, such as increasing wages and paying for performance. Increasing use of labourers for unskilled work so that skilled workers are able to work more productively and efficiently. Improving the selection process of casual staff to reduce time and effort in training. Australias economic prospects There is plenty of evidence to support confidence in Australias economic resilience and recovery. The labour market is strong and is expected to continue strengthening in 201011 but that is sure to further intensify the skills shortages. Given this, the challenge for businesses will be about how to expand as well as how to attract, retain and upskill staff. Training and education will be a key modul of this. The education and training system must support people to augment their qualifica tions and experience in order to increase and broaden their skills base to foster increased productivity, says Heather Ridout, Chief Executive, Australian Industry Group (AiG). Gerhard Vorster, regional managing partner of Deloitte Consulting Asia Pacific, emphasises the central role that education providers will play in helping to combat future skills shortages. In terms of training and development of existing and future talent, Australia is blessed with an innovative and vibrant education sector. The increased competition in this market means that TAFEs and other training providers are looking to collaborate and partner with business, says Vorster. The tertiary education systems success will become increasingly important as companies continue to focus on building the skills of their existing workforce as the most significant part of the solution to combating skills shortages, says Ridout. A workplace bully can be your babo or your coworker. He or she may intimidate you, embarrass you, gossip about you, keep you from getting work done or verbally abuse you. None of it is behavior you, or anyone, deserves. No one should ever make you feel uncomfortable at work. If itcausesjob stress, causes you to underperform at work, or forces you to ?quit your job, it is a threat to your livelihood. When someone is bullying you, you can report it to the human resources department of your organization. You may be hesitant to do that if your anfhrer is the perpetrator. That is, of course, your choice. However, if a physical threat is involved,dont waste a minute before reporting it to both your employer and the police. Besides reporting non-violent workplace bullying,here are five other ways to cope with it Seek the Advice of a Trusted Mentor Your mentor, or someone else with more experience than you, may have been in this situation before or may know someone who has.
