Donât be a sore loser. Recruiters find the sour grapes mentality very off-putting and complaining has no benefit to you. Sometimes you get the job, sometimes you donât. Are you the Right Fit for the Company When you go through the interview process for a job, you go to great lengths to demonstrate that your skills are a great match for the position. Common sense, right? What if everything you thought about the hiring process was reversed? Rather than spend time talking to them about your experience, maybe you should spend time on how you think and feel. People are hired for their experience and skills, but theyâre most often fired for not being able to fit into the corporate culture. Mark Murphy, author of Hiring for Attitude, said in a 2012 Forbes interview: âWhen our research tracked 20,000 new hires, 46% of them failed within 18 months. But even more surprising than the failure rate, was that when new hires failed, 89% of the time it was for attitudinal reasons and only 11% of the time for a lack of skill.â Skills do matter, of course, but they can be learned. What canât be learned are things like coping well with stress or being creative. Those are inherent personality traits, and theyâre an important part of what makes people successful and happy on the job. Brett Goodnough works for Culture Index, a company that has developed a tool to measure an individualâs style, demeanor, character, drive, and energy level. These characteristics, when compared to a companyâs profile of what a job requires, can help prevent turnover and help executives manage performance. The tool is licensed to companies to help them select, hire, manage and promote workers based on fit with the company culture and the job duties. Itâs designed, Goodnough says, to reduce the chance of trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, always a painful process for both the peg and the hole. Youâve probably experienced the pain at some point in your career. If youâve ever been hired into a corporate culture that just wasnât a fit, you know how miserable you feel. Being the only risk taker in a group of detailed perfectionists, for example, or being the only introvert in a team of strong extroverts could make you dread coming to work every day. The Culture Index tool is designed to develop a personality profile for specific jobs within the company. Candidates and workers within the company take the index to determine how their personalities line up with the job requirements. Goodnough says that candidates who are a good match for the job profile have an 88 percent success rate. That matches almost exactly the statistic Mark Murphy cites above: attitude is 89 percent of why people succeed or fail at the job. I took the Culture Index assessment, which is not generally available to the public, to get a feel for how it assesses candidates. The tool asks you to choose terms that describe who you are, and then to choose terms that describe the traits you need to have in order to succeed on the job. (A large gap between the two can indicate how stressful your current job is, since when youâre suppressing your strongest personality traits, your stress level skyrockets.) The profile that emerged pegged me as an independent decision maker with lots of creative ideas. Good with the big picture; better leave the details to other people. (The guys in accounting would heartily agree.) When you start thinking in terms of personality instead of skills, you start to think about the interview process in a whole new way. Employers can ask behavior-based questions that probe for personality traits, which Goodnough explains are set by the time youâre twelve years old. What you need for a super strong business foundation - When I Grow Up Man oh man, have I done some overhauling with my Clubhouse. I launched in almost 2 years ago to, um, less than desirable results. Then, I overhauled it and launched it again and then closed the doors til the end of 2012. I was gonna write a quick post that says just that along with the link to check it out, but instead of just *telling* you itâs open and whatâs changed, I wanted to give it to ya along with the why. As you know, Iâm all about being transparent about my business goals, challenges, wins and decisions and I thought it would be helpful for ya to get a bigger sense of how I came to make these changes. Below, youâll find the email I sent to my current Clubhousers last month announcing the changes. Feel free to use it as a template for your clients when you decide to change up your offerings / boundaries / guidelines in the midst of working together. I know thatâs always a scary conversation to have! Hi NAME! Iâm so excited to let you know all about the Clubhouse goodness thatâs about to take effect. Iâm pretty close to opening the doors back up exclusively to my Career Campers and my Grads (those whoâve coached with me for 12 sessions or more) at the end of the month, whichâll be followed by a month of open-to-the-public, um, openness! Hereâs whatâs up via some FAQs: 1. Why are the Clubhouse offerings changing? When I first launched the Clubhouse, I didnât offer it up to a particular subset of my audience. Instead, I wanted it to be All! The! Things! to all the people who come to me for help those who donât know what they wanna be when they grow up; those who do but not how to make it happen, and those whoâre making it happen but itâs not quite working as well as theyâve been hoping. Since thatâs really evident at this point, I immediately started brainstorming what would be the most valuable offerings in the Clubhouse for new-ish creative, female business owners. I had a ton of ideas, but they got narrowed down right quick thanks to the survey that so many of you filled out a month or two ago (so helpful!). It became immediately apparent that you wanted to work on building your foundation: prioritization, goal-setting, getting your deadlines on the calendar and ensuring theyâre met, and actually following through to finish what you start.â¦.and you wanted it specific to your business needs/goals/priorities/values not a pre-fab âcourseâ of tasks telling you what to learn/do/spend time on. You also wanted more community/hang-out time, and I donât blame ya. Weâre a pretty fantastic bunch Iâd wanna spend more time with us, too! 2. Whatâs being offered?
